What are the benefits of starting swim lessons at an early age?

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

We all know that swimming is good for our physical health. We also want to ensure our children learn to swim as swimming is one of the life skills we must acquire at some point in our lives.

But why should you start it early? Here are some reasons why we offer Parent & Me swimming classes at Compass apart from the fun your child can have in the pool with us.

Introducing your baby to the pool can do wonders for their growth.
That’s because all the things that we teach your baby in the water are structured to align with their key development milestones. And not just their physical ones, but their cognitive ones too.

Being in the water helps your baby move independently before they can crawl or walk. They will become a lot more coordinated out of the water too.

Cross-lateral movements (ones that cross the midline of the body) like reaching for a ball or swimming in the water help with hand-eye coordination and overall body coordination, but most importantly it allows both sides of the brain to work together. This increased communication has been linked to improvements in a wide range of cognitive functions, including memory, attention, and creativity. All those magical words, right?

Activities like chasing toys or grasping them in the pool help with those fine motor skills as well which will become crucial later in holding a pencil and writing.

Swimming strengthens their heart, and lungs as well as their arm, leg, neck, and back muscles.

Baby swimming is proven to work up appetite and helps with sleeping patterns. Another magical word after a few months of sleepless nights :)

Research has indicated that baby swimming results in increased social, academic, and personality development. It also increases confidence. The excitement of learning something new and achieving something they’ve been working on will give your little one the confidence to try and learn new things

Last but not least, water is the perfect place to connect and bond with your baby, where your little one can feel and hear your heartbeat, and play with you by his side. Building fun memories together with you is never too early to start!

Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. We are here to help and give you and your little one a positive first experience in the pool.

If you are interested in our Parent & Me classes, please sign up. Our Fall group classes start on October 11, 2023, and run for 6 weeks. See you in the pool!
